Distillate vs. Live Resin vs. Rosin: Minnesota's Guide to Cannabis Extracts

February 28, 2026 7 min read

Understanding the differences between the three most popular cannabis concentrates in Minnesota's market.

As Minnesota's cannabis market continues to mature, consumers and brands are faced with an ever-expanding menu of product choices. Beyond the familiar flower, the world of cannabis concentrates offers a diverse range of experiences, potencies, and flavors. Three of the most popular types of extracts you'll encounter in Minnesota dispensaries are distillate, live resin, and rosin. But what exactly are they, how are they made, and how do you choose the right one?

What is Cannabis Distillate?

Think of cannabis distillate as the most refined and purified form of THC. It is a thick, translucent amber oil that has been stripped of virtually all other compounds — including terpenes and minor cannabinoids — through a process called fractional distillation. The primary goal is to isolate a single cannabinoid, typically Delta-9-THC, at its highest possible concentration.

At BSD Labs, our multi-pass distillation process consistently produces distillate testing above 90% total cannabinoids. The process begins with crude cannabis oil, which undergoes winterization, filtration, and decarboxylation before entering our short-path distillation system. Heat and vacuum pressure are used to separate the different compounds by their boiling points, resulting in a clean, potent, and versatile oil.

Key characteristics of distillate: It is highly potent (90%+ THC), has a neutral flavor and odor due to the removal of terpenes, and is extremely versatile — making it the preferred base oil for vape cartridges, edibles, tinctures, and capsules.

What is Live Resin?

Live resin is a type of high-terpene, full-spectrum extract (HTFSE) that is prized for its intense flavor and aroma. The key differentiator is the starting material: unlike other extracts made from dried and cured cannabis, live resin is made from plants that are flash-frozen immediately after harvest.

By freezing the plant material at harvest, the delicate terpene profile is preserved in a way that drying and curing cannot achieve. The extraction process — typically using a hydrocarbon solvent like butane or propane — is then performed at very low temperatures to maintain the full spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes present in the living plant.

Key characteristics of live resin: It has an exceptionally rich flavor and aroma that captures the true profile of the cannabis strain, contains a full spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes (the "entourage effect"), and can range in consistency from a sticky sauce to a more solid wax.

What is Rosin?

Rosin is a type of solventless extract, meaning it is produced without the use of any chemical solvents. This makes it a popular choice among purity-focused consumers and brands. The process is elegantly simple: cannabis flower, hash, or kief is placed in a specialized press and subjected to a combination of heat and pressure, which squeezes out the resinous sap from the plant material.

When made from flash-frozen material, the result is called "live rosin" — considered a top-tier, connoisseur-grade product that combines the purity of solventless extraction with the terpene richness of live material.

Key characteristics of rosin: It is completely solvent-free, can be very flavorful and aromatic when made from quality material, and is generally more expensive due to the labor-intensive process and lower yields compared to solvent-based methods.

Which Extract is Right for Your Minnesota Brand?

For Minnesota cannabis brands and manufacturers, the choice of extract depends on your target consumer and product positioning. Distillate is the workhorse of the industry — its versatility, high potency, and neutral flavor make it ideal for a wide range of products, especially vape cartridges and edibles where consistent dosing is critical. Live resin commands a premium price point and appeals to connoisseurs who prioritize flavor and the full-spectrum experience. Rosin is the choice for brands targeting the purity-focused, solventless segment of the market.

At BSD Labs, we produce all three types of extracts at our licensed Waseca, MN facility. Whether you need bulk distillate for your vape line, live resin for a premium concentrate product, or rosin for a solventless offering, we are your trusted manufacturing partner in Minnesota.
